Cancun Day 345 29/08/2015

The breakfast at Urban Oasis was delicious and the hotel nearly redeemed itself before we realised that there was a pool party on all day until 2000. We were given the option of visiting one of their sister hotels in the Zona Hotelier which, given we were going to head there to see what the draw was for thousands of holiday makers each year, we thought we'd take advantage of. The city itself really hasn't got any attractions so we got the local bus, with what was to become the customary busker, to the Zona Hotelera. The spit is about 22km long and surrounds a lagoon. Built in the 1970s it was originally a deserted sand-spit located just off the shore from Puerto Juarez, a small fishing village at the time, on the peninsula's eastern shore. We walked through the Palm Oasis to their beach area, appropriately tagged with our wrist bands, to the beach which was packed with lines of sun lounges. We found 2 free under the shade of a palm tree and settled down with the noise from the hotel blaring out. Unfortunately the coast here has been affected by seaweed and a lot of it was still floating in the sea despite the hotel staffs best efforts to remove it. The water is very shallow and you only got up to your waist by the time you reached the buoys and the end of the swim zone. It was nice to cool down though and we enjoyed a few dips before Simon couldn't take any more of the noise and we headed off back to town, with another busker on the bus. We planned to go to Isla Contoy tomorrow and looked around to see if we could book it. We found a company who promised several times that the tour they sold only went to Isla Contoy so we duly booked and then went to a Mexican bar next door for nachos and a free cocktail. Back at the hotel the pool party was in full flow. There was no where free to sit and the pool was brimming with drunk people. We went back to our room, pleased to have a view over the pool from our balcony! In the evening we went back to the Zona Hotelera, with busker on the bus, and the La Isla shopping centre where we'd read there was a very good Thai restaurant. It took a bit of finding but was definitely worth it for the views over the laguna and the quality of the food. Back at our hotel calm had been restored and we enjoyed a little bit of tranquility on our balcony before bedtime.
