Frutillar Day 207 13/04/2015

The forecast was right and it was raining when we woke up. We decided to get the local bus to Frutillar, north west round the Llanquihue lake from Puerto Varas. We had breakfast at Casa Kalfu and walked into town to get the bus. It was about 30 minutes drive in pouring rain but luckily the weather improved as we arrived. Frutillar has two parts, Alto (high) which is a working town and Bajo (low) next to the lake, which attracts the tourists. It's a very Germanic village but other than the attractive pier and new concert hall didn't really have much to offer. We had a wander along the lake shore, stopped off for coffee at the concert hall, Teatro del Lago, built in 2010 and which looked decidedly out of place in such a small village, and then got the bus back to Puerto Varas. We passed a vehicle from France along the front which looked like another long distance travelling machine! Not quite as impressive as the monster we'd seen at the Chilean border a few days ago but still amazing to think it's come all the way from Europe. Back in town we went to a local cafe for lunch before heading back to Casa Kalfu only to find an email to advise that the ferry had been delayed again, this time due to a passenger being taken ill. We're starting to think that we'll never get to Puerto Natales! We're now scheduled to leave Puerto Montt on Wednesday, five days later than the original departure date. However "es Chile!" We rescheduled our accommodation for Puerto Natales, cancelled our accommodation in Ushuaia and tried to work out dates for buses and potentially flights as best we could. We didn't book anything given the constantly moving dates as we don't want to incur any cancellation charges. In the evening we went to the gastro pub that we'd been to on our first night here and had another pie, with Simon washing it down with the Patogonia's main beer Austral (the Calafate is a lovely red ale). The weather looks better tomorrow so hopefully we'll be able to get out in the mountains again before we start to get a bit stir crazy!
