Highlights - Part Three

After nearly 5 months in South America the time has come to move on to Central America. We've had a fantastic time and trying to agree on the highlights has been incredibly difficult. The extraordinary landscape as you travel across the continent has made the journeys themselves at times as special as the places we've visited. The variety and diversity of cultures is something that would be hard to experience anywhere else. Historically it's like a finding a treasure trove. And we've only really touched the surface. And the people; in most places we have been they have been very helpful, friendly and we've felt safe with the odd exception or two. Given we've been here for so long we've decided to share our top 15 highlights! As with our earlier highlights they are in the order in which we experienced them:
  1. Meeting the Moai on Easter Island
  2. Criss crossing the Chilean/Argentina border through the Lake District, seeing the amazing landscape and experiencing some great places, Bariloche and Puerto Varas being the top ones
  3. Walking through the splendour to Torres del Paine National Park (even in the rain!)
  4. Travelling to the end of the earth (well nearly) as we sailed through the Beagle Channel
  5. Watching in amazement at how high their legs go at a Tango show in Buenos Aires
  6. Being in awe of the force of nature at Iguaza/Iguaca Falls
  7. Taking in the sterile beauty of the Atacama desert
  8. Experiencing the serenity of Largo Colorado
  9. Speeding across the expanse of Salar de Uyuni
  10. Surviving La Paz!
  11. Wandering around the beautiful cobbled streets of the colonial towns including Colonia, Cusco,  Arequipa, Villa de Leyva and Cartagena
  12. Marvelling at the wonderful scenery and ruins along the Inca Trail and the stunning Machu Picchu
  13. Flying over the impressive, if some what surreal, Nazca lines
  14. Being constantly bowled over by the fearless wildlife and beauty of the Galapagos Islands

  15. Battling through the heat and terrain of the jungle to reach the haunting and still wild Ciudad Perdida (Lost City)
We've travelled with a third companion for all our time in South America but the time has come to say our goodbyes!
